About Us

The future of America’s democracy and our way of life depends on an informed, critically thinking, and active citizenship.

Being truly engaged with community and public life…
Seeing our country grow into our nation’s ideal of liberty and justice for all…
These are the standard and benchmark of every civic engagement project.

The New Mexico Civic Engagement Initiative promotes active citizenship through a unique partnership between youth, adult sponsors, communities, schools and universities, elected officials, and citizens from all walks of life.

NMCE is a civic education project for all New Mexicans.

‘The goals of civic education …

  • knowledge of the political system and how it really and ideally works…
  • development of the skills of participation in civic life…
  • improvement of civic competence
  • commitment to values compatible with the principles which underlie democratic institutions and a capacity to analyze the consequences of these values
  • development of self esteem so that individuals (and groups) can feel that their participation in civic life can make a difference

The Report of the National Task Force on Citizenship Education,
Education for Responsible Citizenship (1977)

Civic engagement is the deliberate process by which young and old alike come to see themselves as active citizens in public life, from the neighborhood and barrio to the schools, villages, and communities, to local, state, and tribal government, onto to our nation and the world.

The goal of civic engagement is to build more responsible and active citizens.
